Your Favorite Garden Tools?

Your Favorite Tools?
If you were limited to only a few of your "tried & true" garden tools, what would they be? They say we only wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. I'm thinking this is true with all of our gardening tools, as well. What will the "well dressed" gardener be gardening with this Spring?

Last year I bought a sea grass basket at the NJ Flower Show to carry my gardening paraphanalia in. It held a lot of stuff, but my "essential" tools were: trowel, cultivator, pruner, grass shears (not sure what the "official" name for them is)and my bulb planter. I was gardening in three towns last year for the Master Gardeners, Rutgers Gardens and my own yard. Those tools and that basket lived in my car from May through November.

Portability helps, doesn't it? Even though I had a potting shed, I had a big mailbox (on a post) in the garden to hold all my stuff so I has easy access. I have a garden scoop I use all the time...not sure what it's called (maybe soil scoop?) that has jagged edges on it that makes digging in the soil easier. Also garden twine to tie up all the drooping stuff. I think I use my hubby's sharpshooter more than anything to plant quart/gallon sized plants.

My fingernails!!! :) Other than that, I really love my little weeding fork. I use it for everything from digging small holes for planting seeds to... yes, weeding.

My Tiger trowel, garden gloves ( we could discuss the difference between garden glove wearers and non-wearers...), an old, extra-large, wooden handled screwdriver for weeding, digging little holes to squeeze small plants into small spaces, and scratching a shallow ditch for planting seeds,
clippers and a foam kneeling pad...after two knee surgeries I'm protecting what I've got left!

1. Garden gloves (yes, I'm one of those)
2. Trowel
3. Pruners
and most important -
4. kneeling pad!

Without the fourth item I might as well forget the first three!

Yep, I'm with you on the kneeling pad thing. I have several of them...it's kinda like reading glasses, I never know where I put the last one down!! Another tool that I'm not without is my dibble (or dibber, if you please!). I know you can use numerous things, like a finger or pencil to make seed holes, but this tool was given to me by my garden mentor, so it's vital to me. Nice sharp pruners are a must, though Carol, I haven't invested in Felcos yet.

Go to the Felco web site. (www.felco.com) They proudly proclaim that "Felco pruners will change your life". They will. Get thee a pair!

I think I will...thanks for the site.

Wow! I like this site. No.# one-are my Felco pruners, numer 2 and 6. No.# 2-a new Bulldog Dibble-so handy in planting. No.#3-a Dramm ( spray head with variable settings for the hose. And No.#4-soaker hoses, No.5-my little English (rabbit-hole-digger) spade.

Hey Tallulah,
Thanks for the complement. Blogger wouldn't let me post any more blogs on this one, so I made a new one @ ThroughMyGardenGate.blogspot.com

Interesting question that is hard to answer since there are so many tools!
